Accreditation of Colleges Online - What Accreditation Means for You

Accreditation might seem like a confusing factor in your college search. Some schools are accredited and some are not. Some accredited schools might seem shady or have a less than perfect reputation, while some non-accredited schools seem to feature a great program. The fact is accreditation is not a fail-safe. It can guide your choice, but you should ultimately base your final choice on several factors in addition to accreditation. Accreditation of colleges online helps you narrow down your school choices, but it should not be the only thing you consider when making your choice.

Accreditation is a voluntary process in which schools participate to gain credibility. Most accreditation programs require schools to adhere to a higher standard. They must meet certain criteria and undergo evaluations. Accreditation of colleges online requires a self-study and an evaluation by the accrediting agency. Many of these evaluations are very thorough and really maintain a high standard for schools. Accreditation is not something to be taken lightly in most cases. Schools must undergo the process over and over again, just to ensure they are maintaining certain standards.

Most schools feature either a national or regional accreditation. There are schools that have both and schools that are accredited by a different organization altogether, but generally you will find accreditation claims based on national or regional organizations. National accreditation and regional accreditation are both worthwhile achievements for a college. They require many of the same criteria and both can be viewed as something that makes a school stand out from others without the same type of accreditation. There are more regional accrediting bodies than there are national. When determining how impressive a school is, be sure to check the requirements of the accrediting institution in addition to the qualifications of the school.

One of the main reasons students choose accredited schools over ones that have no accreditation is due to the way in which potential employers view an accredited degree. Unfortunately, but rightfully so, some employers are still skeptical when it comes to hiring someone who has earned their degree online. There are online schools that are basically selling diplomas. They do little to prepare students for a particular field of employment. This is not always the case, but it gives employers pause. Being able to supply your employer with information about your schools accreditation eases their mind. Accreditation of colleges online helps employers realize who is legit and who is not.

It is important to remember that not all accreditations are equal. Just as a student can enroll in a college online, pay a fee, and have a diploma in a few days, colleges can apply for accreditation from less than impressive accrediting agencies. When reviewing school choices, make sure you understand what your school's accreditation required. The last thing you would want to do is tell a potential employer you attended an accredited school, only to find out the accreditation meant very little in regard to the school's quality. Conduct thorough research of accreditation of colleges online and you will be able to make the right choice for your school.
